Common Tiktok Scam Tactics
Know what to look out for on Tiktok.
For every genius life hack from your FYP, there is also someone scamming. TikTok's fast-paced world can make it simple to fall prey to fake giveaways, impersonators, and get-rich-quick schemes.
Recognizing a Toxic TikTok Account
- Impersonators: Thieves make replica accounts of celebrities or businesses (e.g.,
MrBeast_Official_Giveaway) to operate fake contests. Be sure to check for the official verification badge. - Bot Activity: It is suspicious to see an account that has a million followers yet only has a few dozen comments per video. It may be that they purchased fake followers to look authentic.
Most Popular TikTok Scams of Today
- "Cash Flipping" & Investment Frauds: Projects that claim to double $100 to $1,000 by trading crypto or forex are rarely anything but ruses to take your money. We suspend accounts that use this type of language.
- Fake Competitions & Giveaways: "First 1000 followers win $500! Bio link!" These are usually phishing websites that will steal all personal information from your account. - Phishing DMs: Messages that say that you won something or that your account is at risk, that request that you click a link and "verify" your login credentials.
