Common Instagram Scam Tactics
Know what to look out for on Instagram.
Your feed is for friends and cool content, not for scammers. But with billions of users, Instagram is a prime target for fraud. Our detector helps you see if a profile is legit or a lie.
How We Read a Profile
Scam accounts exhibit red flags. An account that was created last month and has 2 posts, 50 followers, and is following 7,000 users is likely to be a bot. We also look for the blue check. Scammers usually pretend to be brands and celebrities but are not officially verified.
Are the Photos Real? We perform a quick reverse image search of the profile picture to check if it's a stolen photo from another person's profile page or is it a stock image. We also check for traces of AI-generated images.
Engagement and Quality of Followers
100 thousand followers and only 10 likes per post is suspicious. It usually indicates that the followers are not real (bots). We look at the engagement to follower ratio to determine fake accounts.
Common Instagram Scams
- Fake Brand Giveaways: For example, a DM from
addidas_official_dealsthat claims you won something. The actual account is `@adidas. - Cryptocurrency Scams: Direct Messages from "successful investors" that promise sure large profits.
- Romance Scams: An attractive stranger DMs you, quickly professes their love, and then starts asking for money.
