What Is Catfishing?
Catfishing is when someone creates a fake online identity, often using a stolen or AI-generated photo, to build a relationship under false pretenses. It shows up most often in dating apps and social media messages, where the fake identity's job is to build enough trust to eventually ask for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or personal information. The photo is usually the first thing worth checking, since a catfish profile depends on a face that looks real but is not actually the person you are talking to. That is also the fastest thing to verify: a reverse image search and an AI-generation check on the profile photo will surface most fake identities before the conversation goes any further.
