A profile photo looks a little too perfect. The lighting is flawless, the features are strikingly symmetrical, and something about it feels more like a magazine cover than a casual selfie. AI-generated images have gotten good enough that spotting them by eye alone is no longer reliable the way it was even a couple of years ago. That does not mean it is impossible to check, but it does mean the old advice, like counting fingers or looking for warped backgrounds, catches fewer fakes than it used to.

Look at where a person's hair meets the background, at earrings, glasses, or complex jewelry, and at anything in the background with fine repeating detail, like text, patterned fabric, or a crowd of people. AI models still struggle more with these fine, structured details than with a face itself.

A genuinely AI-generated image will not appear anywhere else online, since it does not correspond to a real photograph, while a stolen real photo often will surface attached to a different name or account. Seeing both results together, no provenance data and no reverse image matches, is a stronger signal than either check alone.

Ask for a real-time video call or a simple new photo taken on request, such as holding up a specific number of fingers or a handwritten note. This remains one of the most reliable checks available, since it requires a real person, in real time, responding to something that could not have been prepared in advance.
